Can I claim the cost of an eye test from my employer?

March 27, 2014

If your job means that you spend a large amount of time looking at a computer screen then you may be able to claim the cost of an eye test and even the cost of a pair of spectacles from your employer.

If you use a computer screen for more than one hour per day then you can request that your employer provide an eye test for you. The usual process is for you to take the test at a convenient opticians and then claim the cost of this from your employer.

If the eye test shows that corrective lenses or spectacles are required, these can also be claimed on expenses too. The contractor therefore gets relief from income tax at their highest rate of tax and also relief from Employees NI and Employers NI.

You can find lots of useful information about looking after your eyes as well as where to get an eye test from the College of Optometrists.

For further information on claiming expenses as contractor or freelancer please call us on 020 7397 2882 or email contact@carringtonumbrella.co.uk
