Expenses: Claiming the cost of work clothes

Recently we had queries from contractors regarding the topic of claiming expenses for their work clothes. In general claiming the cost of your work clothes is not permitted, however there are some interesting exceptions…
The exceptions when claiming the cost of your work clothes:
E.g. A waiter who has to wear a dinner jacket is permitted BUT a bank worker with a dress code of a dark suit would not be permitted. Note: Badges/logo’s etc must not be detachable.
Not all required uniform would be allowable. For instance a uniform of smart trousers and a company polo shirt with company name embroidered on it would only include the polo shirt as allowable.
