Is it possible to claim for CPD??
December 7, 2015
Carrington Umbrella recently received a question from one of our contractors about claiming for Continual Professional Development (CPD) and we thought the answer may be interesting.
Our contractor is a Professional Chartered Surveyor and as such pays a fee of £500 each year but they also have to complete CPD in order to maintain their membership of their professional body. This CPD needs to be in the form of both formal and informal CPD. The formal CPD generally means attending courses which are both paid and unpaid. The question is;
‘Is it permissible to claim the cost of some of the formal CPD via the expenses system?’
Our payroll Coordinator Luke Parker was able to provide the following answer.
As long as the CPD is required either for the particular work you are doing, or it is required to maintain your eligibility or status as a Professional Chartered Surveyor, you will be able to claim the cost of attending or completing CPD as a work expense.
In addition to the cost of the course you can also claim the cost of travel to and from your CPD course.
The cost of maintaining your membership of your professional body is also claimable as a work expense.
As with all expenses, aside from subsistence, you can claim the actual amount spent and will need to provide receipts or invoices for the costs of all these work expenses.
