Expenses: Claiming while working away from home
March 11, 2014
One of our clients recently asked about what amounts can be claimed as business expenses when working away from home and is there a need to keep receipts.
We are seeing a much higher percentage of our contractors taking contracts that require them to work away from home. One of our clients recently asked the following:
Q: “Hi, can you clarify something please. In the Carrington Expenses guide it gives amounts that can be claimed while working a staying away. Are these amounts un-receipted or do they need to be supported by receipts – for example the overnight bed and breakfast allowance working outside of London is £75.”
A: John Mumford, our technical director explains…
“Carrington Umbrella have agreed the amounts that can be claimed with HMRC, under a ‘dispensation agreement’. These agreed expense allowances can be claimed without receipts where you are able to show that you did incur an expense – for instance that you were working far enough away from home that staying in a hotel was reasonable. You can actually claim more if you did have a receipt for more.”
